with Andries Dunn

Name: Andries Dunn
Hometown: Mossel Bay

Before we get started, tell us where you surf, what you ride, and are you a goofy or natural foot?
I’m a goofy foot and I’ve been surfing since the age of eight years old. I love flying down the line on my 5’8″ fish, mostly surfing at Outer or Inner pool in Mossels.

Tell us a little bit about your art?
I would say I am a fine artist. Attention to detail with a twist of the abstract!

Andries Shredding
Andries shreds his local spot Outer Pool, mostly on self-shaped retro boards.
Soundwave
“This piece is called ‘Sound Wave’, it’s one of my personal favourites.” claims Andries. “It was drawn at a friend’s house with a black ball-point pen out of pure boredom. Then I scanned it in and photoshopped it like crazy!”

If you think back, can you remember your first piece of art you created?
Ja, I can! It was early days at primary school and I remember we had a great art teacher. Our first project was an A2 self portrait pencil sketch which came out pretty amazing. From there the foundation was laid and plenty more projects followed.

Why does art interest you?
Working with my hands is the only thing that I’m really good at and I can’t imagine myself doing anything else!

From where (or whom) do you draw your inspiration?
Most of my inspiration comes from my surrounding environment, like nature, a good session, good music and family!

‘Enjoy’ is a vector graphic Andries created from a photograph of Twiggy which featured in the Zag a few issues back!

Two more vector graphics of Andries’. The piece on the left is called ‘Standing Tall’ – it’s a picture of his best mate. ‘Night Surfing Contest @ Inners’ is the title of the graphic featured on the right.

What art do you most identify with?
Surf art only!

What are your favourite mediums and what kind of projects do you like working on?
I have used a few different techniques to create my art pieces. Some of my projects are your classic oil paintings on canvas/wood, some pastel drawings, airbrush and my favourite medium is ink/pencil sketches scanned into my PC and digitally enhanced using varies editing software.

Do you have a favourite work of art?
Ja I do, it’s an ink sketch of inner and outer pool which I scanned and digitally enhanced – I called it the “The Pools”!

An oil pastel sketch.
Naturally, being a surfer and an artist, surfboards are one of Andries’ favourite canvases.

Do you have any exhibitions planned?
I don’t have any official exhibitions planned yet, but I’m currently working on a showroom/workshop!

Where can people see more of your work?
I upload most of my work on Facebook or they can pop in by my workshop in Mossels or give me a call on 071 201 4192

“On the left is a sketch I am not quite finished with yet. On the right is more art on a stick!” explains Andries.

What is your dream project?
One of my dream projects would be to create a poster or a trophy for a major surf contest and/or creating t-shirt designs for a major surfing company.

Lastly, tell us who your favourite artist is:
Locally: Legends Any Mason, Stephen Bibb, Yvonne Robinson, Martin Bakker…
Internationally: Hilton Alles, Drew Brophy, Patrick Pakker, Heather Brown, Matt Beard…

“This is one of my personal favourites. It’s an abstract piece I’ve called ‘The Pools’ and it shows inners, outers and the paddling pool. My local!”
