From the moment Julian Wilson touched down from his massive 10-point-scoring alley oop in Round 3 of the Rip Curl Pro Portugal, the question was asked – was it higher than John John Florence’s in Bali?
The debate is quite literally up in the air, and it’s a tough call.
Both were huge, both scored perfect 10’s, and both on their own leave you quite literally blown away.

Some may argue that JJF’s was higher, while others will say JW’s is, but it sure was funny when the beach announcer, Reggae Ellis, asked Julian during their post-heat interview, “the question now is, whether yours is bigger than John John’s?”
“I don’t know, I doubt it, that thing he did at Keramas was a pretty amazing moment.” he replied. “I gave it my best shot, but I don’t think it compared to his one.”
Of course, Julian, ever so modest, hadn’t yet seen the evidence.

Personally, I was gobsmacked when I first saw them and I couldn’t compare. But then a friend pointed out that Julian’s wave started out so bowly, but he raced to the fat section to punt his. It’s hard to imagine what he would have done on that first section – which I believe John John would have hit. It’s all personal preference, though. Let’s see more.
Sheesh I reckon Julians was bigger. Close though. Insane surfing. This is huge stuff.
Okes John’s air was the judge breaker -he had the judge’s balls in a vice to set the bar/standard for chucking down 10’s for one single move.
Julian’s was smoother more controlled because he was not as high.
If the judges keep going this way ….a lot of combo surfing is getting chucked out the window…..as in airs ,tubes and traditional moves…..very fine line to be drawn.
Basically as a pro judge what you are saying to the surfing world -is if you do a single air executed like this on two separate waves in a heat you will get a perfect 20 heat total.
Sorry to the other silly kook who went hard with the combo’s and only got a 19.99 total .

JJ’s was bigger (very slightly) but Julians was much cleaner and smoother..both were ridiculous and both definitely deserve 10’s
