#SURFTHEBUS is a cool initiative started by a group of stoked Cape Town city locals looking for a way to go surf out of town while reducing carbon emissions. They did this by utilising public transport instead of leaving their own carbon footprint trailing behind a convoy of their own personal vehicles.
After their first successful mission, they thought it would be a great idea to extend an invitation to like-minded eco-conscious shredders to join up and have a good time while doing their small bit to slow down global warming.
Take a look at the edit below featuring outtakes from their first mission out of town. If it looks like something you’d dig to get involved in, then meet at the Civic Centre MyCiTi bus station at 7:00am tomorrow (Saturday, 1 March), after which you’ll cruise as a posse to go seek some waves even further up the coast. The report is looking promising, so why not? [ More details below ]

#SURFTHEBUS Open Surf Session on Saturday 1 March
A group of stoked surfers are meeting up on Saturday 1 March at 7am at the Civic Centre MyCiTi Bus Station where we’ll catch the next bus heading up the West Coast. We’d like to extend the invite to other Cape Town based surfers who are keen to join.
We’ll first stop at Buzuka Surfboards at The Board Box in Paarden Island where we’ve arranged to pick up some Buzuka demo boards for the surfers to try. Then we’ll catch the next bus to go find some epic surf.
More details can be found here on the Facebook Event.
#SURFTHEBUS started as a simple idea to go surfing up the west coast, on a mid-week morning, without having to deal with the traffic on the way back in to Cape Town. But later that day when we watched the GoPro footage of our trip, we realised that we could use the footage to inspire other surfers to do the same thing and perhaps even get some South Africans to re-think the possibilities of public transport.
If you don’t have a charged MyCiTi Bus card then remember to bring some cash to charge your card. A MyCiTi Bus card is another R25 if you don’t have one.
We look forward to catching some waves with you and saving some Carbon Emissions at the same time!
NB. You must be a fairly experienced surfer and comfortable riding West Coast Beach Breaks.
This is not an official event. Its a bunch of surfers going on a mission. We don’t accept responsibility for the safety of anyone joining us on the mission.

Great initiative, but the last time I checked carbon emissions didn’t have an effect on the ozone layer. Ozone degradation was dealt with about 2 decades ago. Carbon emissions contribute to the greenhouse effect that leads to global warming and climate change. I saw a pro surfer say the same thing about carbon emissions and the
ozone layer during a WCT webcast, and it’s a very dim statement to make. We really don’t need to perpetuate the dumb surfer stereotype…
