Day 3 of the Billabong Junior Series presented by Bos kicked off at 11:00am this morning, with competition getting underway in light offshore conditions which were further complimented by perfect, sunny weather. The waves at Magnatubes also delivered for competitors yet again, with 2-3 foot lines rolling in throughout the day, allowing for some solid rides and excellent scores.
The groms couldn’t have asked for cleaner conditions.
Angelo Faulkner proved that local knowledge pays off after he scored an excellent 8.0 in the opening heat of the Under 14 Boys semi final. After connecting the dots through to the inside and finishing off with a stylish air reverse, Angelo solidified the win by posting another solid scoring 7.90, giving him the highest heat total of the day (15.90). Finishing just behind him and also advancing through to the U14 Boys final was Max Elkington, who will be joined by Eli Beukes and Julian Zens.

Next to hit the water for the second round of the day were the Under 14 Girls for their semi finals. It came as little surprise that local favourite Kai Woolf delivered the standout performance once again. After scoring an excellent 8.0. backed by a 7.0, Kai quickly put her fellow competitors in a combination situation, surfing with style and power beyond her years. If Kai maintains this form, she’ll be looking to take a home town victory in the Under 14 Girls finals scheduled for tomorrow. But standing between her and the top place podium will be Kelly Fenton, Gabi Lailvaux and Kelly Medley.

Kai Woolf then went on to win her U16 girls semi final heat with another solid 15.00 heat total, one of her waves coming in at an excellent 8.5 – which was the highest single scoring wave of the day. Finishing in second place in Heat 1 of the U16 Girls was fellow local competitor, Kirsty McGillivray who also advanced along with Anna Jellema Butler and Natasha Van Greunen.
Kai Woolf was stoked with her excellent performances in both the U14 and U16 divisions.
The Under 12 Boys semi finals also got underway with the groms getting busy in head-high sets which made for some decent performances, the best of which coming from goofy foot Mitch Du Preez, who dominated Heat 1 impressing the judges with his powerful backhand. Placing second was Nathan Spalding, who delivered a series of well-refined forehand carves to join Mitch in the finals, along with Brayden Bergset and Christian Venter.
The final round of the day saw the U20 Junior Women battle it out in the quarter finals, with the one-on-one heats making wave selection all the more crucial. First to draw blood was local top seed, Gina Smith, who put an end to Nina Harmse’s event. Nicole Pallet dominated her Heat 2, as did Olivia Brand in Heat 3 by scoring a near-excellent 7.75 backed by a 6.25 to take out Teal Hogg. Chanelle Botha did well to take the win over Crystal Hulett in the final round of the day to join Nicole, Olivia and Gina in the semis.

The next call will be made at 7:30am tomorrow morning with competition getting underway at 8:00am sharp. If all goes according to plan and conditions plays ball, the finalists will be decided tomorrow for the last day of competition.

Sublime Conditions For Day 3 Of The Billabong Junior Series Presented By BOS Event 1
Magnatubes, Jeffreys Bay – The competitors in the Billabong Junior Series presented by BOS were once again greeted to sublime 3-foot waves peeling down the Magnatubes reef.

The Billabong Junior Series presented by BOS is a two-event junior series, with the second and final event, taking place at Seal Point from 25 – 27 September. This year there are 7 divisions, incorporating PST as well as WSL – rated divisions.
The Billabong Junior Series presented by BOS is the longest- running junior series in the world, and the richest junior series in the country. Magnatubes is the new contest venue, and is a great right-hand point-break, perfectly suited to the dynamic young junior surfers competing in this contest.
Angelo Faulkner was also in top form throughout the day.
Kai Woolf is surfing two divisions (U14 and U16) and the nugget little goofyfooter has dominated every heat she’s surfed in.
“Surfing two divisions definitely takes its strain so you have to make sure you eat the right food. But the waves are so fun so it’s cool to get the opportunity to surf more heats with so few girls out,” she said.
Kai is originally from Jeffreys Bay but is currently living in New Zealand. “Coming home is amazing and this has always been home to me, but surfing in New Zealand has been so beneficial to my surfing. The waves where I live are so fast, so it’s speeded up my surfing.”
