Dawn on Day 2.

Add a dash of crisp offshore, an abundance of South Africa’s top junior surfers, 3 – 4 feet of clean waves at Outer Pool and you get the recipe for an epic day of competition. Day 2 of the Billabong Junior Series presented by BOS provided the perfect platform for South Africa’s young elite surfers to show off their talent in cooking waves.

The Men’s Pro Junior Quarter Finals started the show at Outer Pool’s aqua-auditorium, where Diran Zakarian (Melkbos) drew first blood with a turn so brutally vert that onlookers had no choice but to either gasp, or selflessly hoot on the beach. Diran’s shaper, Dutchie, was seen grinning ear-to-ear.

The biggest upset of the day was in the first Under 18 Boys Quarter Final, where an on-form Richard Kidd (DBN) and Peter Coffey (PE), defeated current SA Junior team members, Max Armstrong (Scarborough) and Steffen Burrows (Stellenbosch). Under 18 Quarter Final Heat 2 saw Kommetjie local Benji Brand (Kom) throw down the biggest turn of the day.

In the Under 16 Boys division, Sebastian Williams (MEX) surfed hotter than a Tobasco-infused jalepeno chilli pepper. With a flurry of deep tubes and critical close-out hacks right over the bricks, he left his competitors flogging a pinata for points.

Alex ”Grape” Van Rijswijck appears to be one of the most improved surfers since last season. In this event, the Pipe (PE) local has been displaying style and maturity beyond his years and firmly stating his intentions on the 2014 competition season. While showing great wave selection, combo-turns and full commitment on his closeout turns over the hungry Outer Pool rocks, he has won every one of his heats so far.

Matt McGillivray (JBay) returned to form after a lengthy stint out of the water to throw down a huge controlled mute grab air during his Under 18 Boys Quarter Final heat. He then landed a big air-reverse in the U16 Boys Quarter Finals.

With his textbook in the pocket flair, Adin Masencamp (Strand) reminded some of a young Taj Burrow as he advanced to the Quarter Finals of the Pro Junior division. There he will face Diran Zakarian, Matt McGillivray and Shane Sykes.

By the time the Women’s Pro Junior division hit the water, the surfing was so radically hot that the earth had no choice but to protect itself from global warming with an apocalyptic downpour. This didn’t deter surfers like Emma Smith and Olivia Brand, who decisively won their heats and advanced into the finals.

The final day of competition is expecting a fresh 3 to 5-foot swell to be rocking Outer Pool, which should make the finals a battle to behold.
