It was the end of the road for Jordy Smith and Travis Logie at the Billabong Pro Tahiti, as all but one of Round 2’s heats were completed at Teahupo’o on Day 5 of the waiting period. Although smaller and less consistent than the opening day the swell was still in the 6-foot range, which encouraged the call to try and get Round 2 completed.

Not as big as Round 1, but Josh Kerr still found some thick barrels in the second round.

In the opening heat of the day, Josh Kerr found the best waves during his match-up with Mitch Coleborn to advance to Round 3. The conditions were definitely testing, with thick chandeliers and barrels pinching all over the show, but he proved there were still some good barrels on offer as he racked-up the day’s highest heat total – 17.90pts.

Unfortunately the ocean decided to take a little rest during the next heat, which saw Jordy Smith and Brett Simpson do battle. Considering that his opponent was in a slump and yet to make it out of Round 2 this year on tour, Jordy was tipped as the favourite to take out the win. The Californian appeared desperate to get the Round 2 monkey off his back however, and showed more urgency to make the most of the few sets that did pull through during the heat to advance to the next round.

It was a disappointing loss for Jordy, who understandably still appeared rattled after taking the heaviest beating of his life in Round 1, which he chatted to Pete Mel about in the channel following the heat.

Travis Logie was set to face CJ Hobgood in Heat 9, but news came in just prior that Trav had withdrawn from competition due to a foot injury sustained on the opening day. The Durban local reportedly cut his foot on the reef as he was getting towed out of the impact zone by the rescue ski during his Round 1 heat, and the resulting injury put an end to his chances of surfing against CJ. For the 2001 World Champ, CJ, it was the first walk-through heat that he has experienced in more than 13 years on tour.

Other heat winners in the tricky, but solid barrels at Chopes in Round 2 before competition was called off were : John John Florence, Bede Durbidge, Tiago Pires, Aritz Aranburu, Mitch Crews and Sebastian Zietz. They’re all through to Round 3, with just Matt Wilkinson up against Adam Melling left to surf before Round 2 is completed.
