Jordy and Travis Advance at Haliewa (Reef Hawaiian Pro)

South African’s Beyrick De Vries, Travis Logie and Jordy Smith contested their first heats of the Reef Hawaiian Pro at Haliewa on Friday.

Haliewa was pumping on the third day of the Reef Hawaiian Pro.

Beyrick had to surf through the pain barrier in Heat 28 of Round 2, due to an injury sustained to his arm while free surfing the previous day. He started fast and registered two scores in quick succession to move into an early lead. Sitting without priority the Umhlanga Rocks local was unable to build on the early momentum, and Caio Ibelli (BRA) answered back with two scores of his own to bump Beyrick from top spot. Australia’s Wade Carmichael then put together a solid two wave salvo and leap-frogged them both. Sitting in third spot and with the clock ticking down, Beyrick grabbed a last-minute wave and went to work needing a 7.20 to advance in second place. His effort came in just shy of that at 7.06, which sees him eliminated from the event.

Jordy went to town in his heat.

Due to his high seeding, Jordy Smith started his campaign in the first heat of Round 3. After a slow start against Maxine Huscenot (FRA), Joel Centeio (HAW) and Michael Dunphy (USA), Jordy built momentum throughout and finished strongly to take out a high-scoring win. A powerfully-surfed 9.50 capped off a good opening performance by the Saffa, who’ll be looking to register a strong start to the Vans Triple Crown.

Jordy powered his way to a 9,50 with this mad turn.

Travis Logie, who announced his imminent retirement from pro surfing this week, put on a good showing in Heat 11 of Round 3. He answered back strongly to Pat Gudauskas’ (USA) fast start, and looked solid on his backhand in the Haliewa bowl. By the end of the heat, won by Owen Wright (AUS) with a near-perfect 9.43 near the buzzer, Pat was found wanting after Travis left him with too much to do on his final ride.

Travis was blazin’ on his backhand.

One of the other highlights of Day 3 was Yadin Nicol’s eye-of-the-tiger approach to the Haliewa bowl. He smashed some powerful lips like this:
