Jordy and Bianca Impress at Trestles

Both Jordy Smith and Bianca Buitendag put together excellent heat totals to win their match-ups and advance at Lower Trestles on Thursday. In the opening heat of the day at the Hurley Pro at Trestles, Travis Logie was still feeling the effects of a foot damaged at Chopes and was relegated to Round 2 after finishing third.

Lineup
The A-Frame peak at Trestles played host to some big battles on Day 3.

Much like at the J-Bay Open, Jordy started strongly and needed just three waves to amass a heat total of 16.06pts. He opened with a 7.83 before coming unstuck on his second wave, but it was his brilliantly surfed third wave that netted him an 8.23 that put him in control of the heat. While he waited for a wave that would better his score, Josh Kerr (AUS) and Tiago Pires (POR) were going on everything trying to make up the difference. That bomb set never came and Jordy patiently waited out the heat. Victory saw Jordy skip directly to the third round where he awaits the results of Round 2 to reveal his opponent.

Following the completion of Round 1 of the Hurley Pro at Trestles, Round 4 of the Swatch Women’s Pro hit the water and Bianca Buitendag faced Dimity Stoyle (AUS) in Heat 3. The Vic Bay local started with two average scoring rides, before hammering a winding right on her backhand for a near-perfect 9.10. Her Australian opponent got herself back into the heat by scoring an 8.10 halfway through the match-up, but Bianca made it difficult for Dimity once again when she posted an 8.63 for another backhand ride a minute and a half later. Bianca’s 17.73 heat total was the highest of Round 4, which makes it two rounds that she has dominated after doing the same in Round 1.

Bianca has advanced to the Quarter Finals where she faces world rankings leader, Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), in Heat 3. Sally grabbed the rankings lead from Carissa Moore after the Hawaiian failed to advance from her Round 4 match-up with Lakey Peterson (USA).

Bianca has now top-scored in two rounds of the Swatch Women’s Pro.

In the Men’s division, Owen Wright looks to be getting back to his best form – which he displayed pre-injury when he challenged Kelly Slater in three back-to-back finals in 2011 – as he posted Round 1’s highest heat total. Working both the lefts and the rights at Lowers, Owen looked both loose and powerful and scored a 9.43 and an 8.00 on his two scoring rides to accumulate a 17.43 heat total.

Round 1 also had some big surprises as both the rankings leader, Gabriel Medina (BRA), and world number two, Kelly Slater (USA), lost to wildcards and will have to surf again in Round 2. Gabriel looked to be having a freesurf during his heat and led for much of the encounter, but the tenacious Costa Rican, Carlos Munoz, fought to the very end. His buzzer-beating 7.73 saw him snatch the lead away from the rankings leader as the crowd went crazy on the beach in support. Kelly Slater started strongly against wildcard Tanner Gudauskas (USA) and Matt Wilkinson (AUS), who beat the 11-time world champ in J-Bay. But Tanner worked a long right-hander on his backhand to snatch the lead from Slater with the heat’s highest score – an 8.50.

Carlos
Costa Rica’s Carlos Munoz was responsible for the upset of the day.

Adriano De Souza (BRA) and Nat Young (USA) also impressed in Round 1 and skipped directly to Round 3, along with Joel Parkinson (AUS), John John Florence (HAW), Mick Fanning (AUS), Ace Buchan (AUS) and Michel Bourez (PFY)
