Hawaii’s Mark Healey is one of the world’s most respected and fearless big wave surfers. He has ridden giant waves in many corners of the world, even South Africa, where he competed in the Red Bull Big Wave Africa in 2008, and many of you will remember this attempt at taming Dungeons.
He’s also not afraid to backdoor the left at Mavericks, nor paddle into huge waves at Jaws – one of the most revered big waves in the world.
His hard charging during some of the world’s biggest swells are enough for the layman to label him ‘crazy’ or ‘brave’, but Mark also loves to swim with sharks. Here he is delivering a solid hand-off that Bismarck would be proud of to an inquisitive tiger shark during a recent free dive.
All this begs the question – is Mark Healey the world’s bravest surfer?
