Grow a Mo, Wear Some Threads, Shred – Off-The-Lip, Mo Retro Surf Jam

For those that take their mo growing as serious as their surfing, Quiksilver’s Off-The-Lip, Mo Retro Surf Jam is especially for you. Heck, even if you’re not that serious about growing a kick-ass strip above your lip, this one’s going to be worth the effort.

Although Brandon Jackson, John ‘JJ’ Jones and Dan Redman might only be sporting their five o-clock shadows in this pic, they’ll be hoping to impress come 16 November.

The rules are simple – grow a mo, wear some classic threads, and shred on a pre-80’s single-fin or twinnie.

The event is set for 16 November at Beach Bums in Casuarina Beach on the KZN North Coast, and entry costs R100 – which gets you a limited-edition T-Shirt and lunch, as well as giving you a shot at winning some great prizes – like this classic retro twinnie shaped by Peter Lawson.

SURFERS TO RALLY FOR A GOOD CAUSE AT SEVENTIES RETRO SURF DAY

PressPic

Casurina Beach, Tongaat – Surfers of all kinds have been invited to partake in a day of seventies surfing and moustache claiming at the inaugural Off The Lip, Mo Retro Surf Jam. The event has been conceptualized by Quiksilver and Movember with the intention of bringing awareness to prostate and testicular cancer and various other men’s health issues as well as to celebrate the seventies era that contributed immensely to the surf lifestyle.

The event is scheduled for 10h00 on Saturday the 16th of November at the infamous Beach Bums Restaurant on Kwa-Zulu Natal’s north coast. Surfers are encouraged to dress up in seventies surf outfits, alter ego’s welcomed, and ride surfboards relevant to the era. All surfboards ridden have to be pre 1980’s single or twin fins. The event format will see ten six-man heats take to the water via the traditional beach start with the top six surfers set to battle it out in the final heat scheduled for 14h30. Judging will not follow the regular criteria and entrants will be scored according to their style, originality, creativity and unique approach to each wave ridden.

Prizes for best dressed male and female in character are up for grabs as well as other surf related awards including the “Larry Layback”, “Float The Boat” and “Wave Waster” awards to mention just a few. R100 is all that it costs to enter with a first come first serve policy of 60 surfers. All surfers, families, friends and members of the public are welcome to come down to the beach to join in the fun and support a good cause. All monies raised on the day will be donated to Movember’s men’s health partner, CANSA. Shuttle services have been arranged to and from the event, leaving from Umhlanga Rocks, to allow beach-goers to enjoy a few cold ones while jamming to the good vibrations of the seventies classics that will be rocking on the day.

“We have been working closely with the team at Movember this year and we’re very excited to be associated with the organization. This event is the perfect way to put a surf twist on Movember and a serious topic. We hope to see a good turnout on the day and are calling for all local surfers to get involved to support a great cause.” said Dane Patterson, Quiksilver marketing and sales manager.
