A slight onshore wobble in the morning gave way to fresh offshores for the opening day of the Billabong Pro Junior at Seal Point. The surf on the point was fun at first light, but dropped off slightly in the face of the growing offshore. The competitors were unfazed with the conditions and took to the surf with gusto, every one of them determined to make their mark in this prestigious event.

“There are some good waves coming through on the point,” said contest director Cyril Nel. “The wind is coming up quite strong, but the competitors are still banking scores in the good category, and there are still sets pouring through.

The U16 boys were the first in the water, and they were fighting hard to get through their heats. Heat winners consisted of surfers like Matthew McGillivray, Adin Masencamp, Donovan Wichmann and Max Armstrong.

The contest organisers are set on a full day of competition, and conditions look good for the rest of the event.

The contest is sanctioned by Surfing South Africa, the governing body of the sport in South Africa, while the Pro Divisions are sanctioned by ASP Africa.
