With competitive surfing events happening every other weekend for the country’s top surfers, speciality events like Rolling Retro, the Jesus Fish Festival, and this weekend’s Off-the-Lip Mo Retro Surf Jam offer the non-competitive surfers among us a fun alternative to competing.
Then there’s the Surf Showdown at the Kommetjie Festival, that takes fun to a whole new level.
Remember Kelpman (Duncan Bailey) from the 2012 edition?
Also taking part were Father Christmas, a distinguished English gentleman, a Spartan, Borat, and a Grade 25 learner from Fish Hoek High.
Jason Baker, Chris Bailey, Warren Browning, James Elsworth, and Andy at the 2012 Surf Showdown.
The Surf Showdown doesn’t have any real rules, but there’s plenty of prizes for things like; Best Dressed Surfer, Most Original Board/Craft, and Most Entertaining Wave of the Day.
The event forms part of the annual Kommetjie Festival, which features other rad activities and plenty of entertainment – including live music by a long list of talented musicians.
One of the other highlights is the ‘Anything that Floats’ event that takes place in the Kom bay.
Entertainment is guaranteed.
The Kommetjie Festival takes place on Saturday, 7 December and if you want to take part in any of the fun events you can register at Kommetjie Surf Shop, on www.kommetjie.org, or contact Roddy on 079 966 0777.
Otherwise just show up and enjoy the show.
