Duty to the Dunes

After making the long mission back to the Noordhoek parking lot after a mission Dunes, Gary Kirkham and his partner filled a bucket and old bag which were also discarded items picked up from the beach! By documenting their efforts, Gary gains entry into our Tuffy Beach Clean-Up competition, which puts him in the running to win a brand new shred stick compliments of Firewire and Share The Stoke Foundation.

After a very chilly, windswept surf down at the dune recently,  we began the walk back to the Noordhook parking lot. Along the way, noticing how much rubbish was being blown off the beach into the ocean during a howling south easter, we began to collect rubbish, mainly plastic bottle tops, straws and sucker sticks. It’s unbelievable when you make a point of looking for specific items how much rubbish is scattered across our beaches. Even the bag and bucket in the picture was found and filled.

I reckon if every surfer that walked back from a session would pick up a piece of rubbish in their path it would make a notable difference to our beaches. There is still heaps of rubbish down the dune and we make a point of never returning to the parking lot empty handed.
