Storm Forces Layday in Rio

Rio, not a morning person.
Rio, not a morning person.

While surf fans around the world struggled to get their live feed to work, a storm forced a lay day for the opening day of the Billabong Rio Pro (and Colgate Plax Girls Rio Pro), leaving them further disappointed.

They all know, however, that a storm usually brings waves, so hopefully when competition resumes we will all be rewarded with some quality ripping by the world’s best.

A lot has happened since Kelly was last in Brazil and stomped this huge alley oop in 2011 – which at the time was claimed as the biggest ever.

So a lot can be expected when competition resumes at Barra Da Tijuca.

Travis Logie will face Julian Wilson (AUS) and Glen Hall (IRE) in heat 7, and Jordy Smith will contest with Kai Otten (AUS) and Adam Melling (AUS) in heat 10 of the Billabong Rio Pro, while Bianca Buitendag will match-up against Rebecca Woods (AUS) and Lakey Peterson (USA) in heat 1 of the Colgate Plax Girls Rio Pro.

Check back later today, when organisers will re-convene to make a call whether to run on Day 2: https://wctbrasil.com/rio13

BARRA DA TIJUCA, Rio de Janeiro/Brazil (Monday, May 8, 2013) – Event organizers have called lay days for both the Billabong Rio Pro and the Colgate Plax Girls Rio Pro, citing poor winds and opting for improved conditions projected in the coming days.

“After assessing conditions throughout this morning, we’ve opted to call a lay day for competition today,” Rich Porta, ASP International Head Judge, said. “We anticipate conditions to improve over the next several days and will return again tomorrow morning to make another call.”

Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow at 6:30am to assess conditions for a possible 7am start.
